Welcome to my comprehensive guide to surfing in Sri Lanka! Sri Lanka is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and affordable surfing destinations in the world. I learned to surf in Sri Lanka and am currently writing this post from Arugam Bay, one of Asia’s top surfing hotspots, on the country’s east coast.
Why Sri Lanka is a Surfer’s Paradise
There are several reasons why Sri Lanka has become such a popular destination among surfers. Warm water year-round, relatively uncrowded lineups, and a welcoming local surf community are just a few of the factors that make it a surfer’s paradise.
Surfing in Sri Lanka: East vs. West
First up, there are two main areas for surfing in Sri Lanka: the Southwest Coast between Hikkaduwa and Weligama, and the East Coast around Arugam Bay. Both of these areas have a distinct surfing season. The South Coast can become fairly crowded during the peak season, but there are also more accessible surf spots and a greater range of food and accommodation options. The East Coast is wilder and less developed, offering more opportunities for surfers who prefer solitude.
Sri Lanka Surf Season
There are two main surf seasons in Sri Lanka: one for the Southwest Coast and the other for the East Coast. The Southwest surf season runs from November to April, while the East Coast season runs from May to October. Whenever you come, there’ll always be somewhere to surf that’s perfectly in season. Sri Lanka truly is a year-round surfing destination!
Best Surf Spots in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has some of the best waves in the world. From Hikkaduwa to Arugam Bay, the island is home to a variety of surf breaks that cater to all levels of ability. Whether you’re a seasoned pro, an intermediate-level surfer, or just someone who wants to try out this fun and addictive sport, Sri Lanka has excellent waves to offer.
Here are some of the top surf spots in Sri Lanka:
Hikkaduwa
Located on the South West coast, Hikkaduwa has been a surfing hotspot since the 1970s. It offers a vibrant beach town, long sandy beaches, and coral reefs. Hikkaduwa has several surf breaks to choose from, including Benny’s, Main Reef, North Jetty, and Hikkaduwa Beach. These breaks cater to surfers of all levels of ability.
Midigama
Midigama is a small village on the Southwest coast, offering five main waves, including Lazy Left, Lazy Right, Devil’s Rock, Rams, and Plantations. It’s a great place to base yourself if you want to try out different surf spots in the area.
Gurubebila / Coconuts
The tiny village of Gurubebila offers a peaceful and unspoiled surf spot. The wave at Coconuts is a powerful A-frame, suitable for decent intermediates and up. It’s a great place to watch the local stick fishermen and enjoy the beautiful sunsets.
Ahangama
Ahangama is a small town known for its impressive waves. Marshmallows, Rajith Surf Point, Kangaroos, and Sticks are some of the popular surf breaks in the area. Ahangama is becoming increasingly popular with expats and offers a range of places to eat, drink, and stay.
Kabalana
Kabalana is a beautiful sandy beach located just north of Ahangama. It offers two main surfing spots: Kabalana Beach and The Rock. Kabalana Beach is beginner-friendly, while The Rock is popular among intermediate and advanced surfers.
Hiriketiya Beach
Hiriketiya is a picture-perfect horseshoe-shaped bay, perfect for learning how to surf. The wave breaks on a rocky point and slowly peels all the way across the bay. Beginners can start close to the beach, while more experienced surfers can take off at the point.
These are just a few of the best surf spots in Sri Lanka. Each spot has its own unique charm and caters to different levels of ability.
Surfing in Sri Lanka: East Coast
Compared to the South, the East Coast of Sri Lanka is wilder and less developed. It offers fewer tourist facilities and a chance to see wildlife on your way to the surf spots. The majority of the East Coast surfing infrastructure is centered around Arugam Bay, which is known for its world-class waves.
Arugam Bay – Main Point
Main Point is widely considered one of the best surf spots in Sri Lanka. It offers a gorgeous natural setting with a fast and hollow right-hand point break. The waves can hold up to 6-8 ft swells, making it suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers.
Baby Point
Baby Point is a perfect spot for beginner surfers. It’s a beach break with small, gentle waves and a sandy bottom, making it ideal for practicing basic skills.
Pottuvil Point
Pottuvil Point is a more sheltered right-hand point break located north of Arugam Bay. It offers long rides of up to 800 meters and is suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers.
Whiskey Point
Whiskey Point is a mellow, right-hand point break. It’s a great spot for beginners and intermediates looking to improve their technique and confidence.
Peanut Farm
Peanut Farm is a favorite spot for beginners and intermediate surfers. It offers consistent waves, a beautiful untouched beach, and the chance to spot wild elephants in the mornings and evenings.
Okanda
Okanda Beach is a remote and wild beach located on the edge of Kumana National Park. It offers powerful waves and is suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers. However, it’s important to note that there are strong rip currents and rocks, so only experienced surfers should attempt to surf here.
These are just a few of the top surf spots on the East Coast of Sri Lanka. Each spot offers its own unique surfing experience.
