The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management (SLITHM) is the premier institute in Sri Lanka approved by the government. Established in 1964, it aims to train individuals in the complex field of Hospitality and Travel Industry. Managed by The Ministry of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs, SLITHM has set up provincial schools in Anuradhapura, Bandarawela, Pallekelle, Koggala, Ratnapura, and Kurunegala to cater to students across the country.
Meeting the Needs of the Tourism and Hospitality Industry
In response to the rapid growth of the tourism sector, SLITHM provides professional training to meet the evolving demands of the local and international hotel and tourism industries. With highly motivated and well-trained management professionals, SLITHM ensures that the industry is equipped with competent personnel. Initially, the institute focused on training individuals for top and middle management positions, along with short courses at the craft level to provide manpower for various departments in the hospitality trade.
Over time, SLITHM has adapted its programs to cater to the changing market needs in Sri Lanka and Asia. They introduce new training schemes frequently, allowing students to specialize in industry-specific areas. This flexibility in training choices also recognizes prior learning, benefiting those with hands-on experience who wish to acquire further knowledge through professional qualifications.

SLITHM has set several targets to ensure the growth and development of the institute and the industry itself. These targets include training a substantial number of Sri Lankans to meet the manpower needs of the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry, preparing graduates for employment both nationally and internationally, achieving the World Tourism Organization Standard, expanding through strategic alliances and partnerships, establishing a dedicated human resource development unit, and continuously improving the tourism education programs to meet global standards.
