Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Schneider.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. I grew up in Ohio in a family of dog lovers, with a very entrepreneurial father. My Dad, (Ray), saw a void in the market for a pet boarding resort that would care for our dog like we did, so he created Red Dog Pet Resort & Spa and opened our very first location in Cincinnati just over 10 years ago. I have always had an interest in business and threw myself into learning all there was to know about the pet care space.
I ultimately came to Boston, my new home, to attend Boston University School of Business where I studied finance and entrepreneurship. When I was a Senior, my brother found a piece of land in the South Boston/Dorchester line that he thought would be a perfect fit for our first Red Dog in the Boston area. We opened the doors of Boston Red Dog seven years ago on that very piece of land.

Today we have provided care to nearly 500k animals between our Red Dog Pet Resort & Spa and Boston Animal Hospital (attached to the resort!). Recently, we opened the doors of our first North Shore location in Saugus, MA. We are thrilled with the state-of-the-art resort we have built there, and the pups seem to be loving it as well!
It has been nothing short of an incredible ride. I have been fortunate enough to have grown in my role in the Company, and valued my experience of being a van driver, pet care provider, front desk staff, overnight care, and everything in between, I truly believe it makes me a better owner/operator and manager. I became the President of Red Dog Pet Resort & Spa nearly two years ago, and am so excited about what the future holds for our company. I am currently actively looking for opportunities for expansion in the Massachusetts are as well as in other metro areas. We believe the Red Dog experience is one which should be shared and available to pets everywhere.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way? Well, it has definitely not been a smooth road! I can’t count the number of sleepless nights I have had over the years over staffing concerns, pleasing customers, and just worrying that every pet is being well taken care of the way it I would treat my own pets. The good news is, our growth has lent itself to a steadiness, a leveling off where the concerns are fewer and the rewards are greater.

It is now so exciting to see our business grow. I love having every single person who comes into work every day with a smile on their face and makes the pets, and ultimately the pet-parents happy, to thank for their dedication to our vision and dream.
Please tell us about Red Dog Pet Resort & Spa. Red Dog Pet Resort & Spa is the premier pet care provider in the Greater Boston area for daycare, overnights, grooming and training. We are known for cleanliness, safety, and most importantly we truly only hire people who love animals. And this comes through in the bonding the pets and care takers experience while the dogs and cats are in our care.
I think I am most proud of seeing what this business has become. It started as a vision, and is now a reality. There is no better feeling than seeing a tail wagging pup and a smiling customer leave one of our resorts that is how we know we’re doing a good job.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently? I have to say, there really isn’t that much I would have done differently. Perhaps some design changes on the Boston location, but otherwise I truly value each lesson I have learned as going through “teachable moments” have made me a better business person and operator.
