Mounting a Generator on a Travel Trailer

DHPL Travels September 19, 2023

Buying a travel trailer is an exciting adventure, but there’s more to consider after your purchase. You’ll need to equip your trailer with a generator and find the perfect travel trailer generator mount. A generator is a vital component that powers all the appliances in your trailer, making life on the road much more convenient. However, installing a generator is not as simple as buying one. In this article, we’ll explore different options for mounting a generator on your travel trailer, helping you find the best generator mount for your needs.

Table of Contents

  • A-Frame Carrier Generator Mount
  • RV Heavy Duty Generator & Cargo Carrier Tray Kit
  • Hitch Carrier Mount
  • Frame Connected Hitch Platform
  • Mounted Storage Box

A-Frame Carrier Generator Mount

The A-frame carrier generator mount is a popular option for mounting a generator on the front of your trailer. By placing the carrier above the propane tanks, you achieve better weight distribution and a more balanced trailer. This method is secure and provides smoother driving. The installation is relatively simple, and most frames come with the necessary installation kit. Adjusting the platform allows for improved weight distribution, ensuring a comfortable ride. However, if you have larger than average propane tanks, this method may not be suitable. It may also block access to the propane tanks, necessitating removal of the mount for refueling.

RV Heavy Duty Generator & Cargo Carrier Tray Kit

Another option is a bumper-mounted cargo tray, such as the ones offered by GennyGo. These carriers can be attached directly to your travel trailer bumper and provide a sturdy platform for your generator. Made in the USA, these heavy-duty cargo carriers come in steel, aluminum, or hybrid versions for added strength and rust resistance. With a 24″ by 24″ cargo carrier, capable of holding up to 400 pounds, you’ll have plenty of space for your generator. The numerous tiedown points make securing your generator a breeze.

Hitch Carrier Mount

If you prefer to attach the generator directly to the rear bumper of your trailer, a hitch carrier is an easy option. However, keep in mind that the bumper may not be designed to handle heavy loads, so consult an expert to determine its weight capacity. Safety struts are recommended to increase the bumper’s load-bearing capabilities.

Frame Connected Hitch Platform

For a more secure option, consider a frame connected hitch platform. This method attaches to the rear end of your trailer and provides less risk of bumper damage. One example is the Curt 13703 Adjustable RV Trailer Hitch, which uses a secure bar to handle more weight. However, be cautious when driving on steep hills as the carrier may drag on the ground. Purchasing a carrier with an angled shank can alleviate this issue.

Mounted Storage Box

Lastly, you can use a mounted storage box as a generator mount, offering ample weight capacity and flexibility in positioning. Most mounted storage boxes can handle nearly 500 pounds, making them suitable for even the largest generators. However, remember to check the weight capacity of your bumper if you choose to mount the generator on the rear end of your trailer.

After finding the best generator mount for your travel trailer, you’ll be ready to hit the road with confidence. Your generator will provide power for all your appliances, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable trip. Which type of travel trailer generator mount appeals to you? Let us know in the comments!
