Imagine a world where every teacher has the knowledge, skills, and understanding to make a real impact on their students’ lives. A world where teachers are equipped with the tools they need to excel in their profession. This is the world that the Master of Education (M.Ed) program in Sri Lanka aims to create.
A Journey Towards Professional Growth
The M.Ed program is a one-year taught course designed to promote the professional development of teachers. It provides an opportunity for teachers to obtain study leave and immerse themselves in an enriching educational experience. The program equips participants with a breadth and depth of knowledge in education, laying a firm foundation for their growth as teachers or other educational professionals.
Objectives of the Course
Upon completing the M.Ed degree course, participants are expected to achieve the following objectives:
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of education theory and practices.
- Apply their knowledge and understanding to various teaching and learning situations in diverse educational settings.
- Acquire a range of generic skills for education, such as communication skills, ICT proficiency, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and interpersonal skills necessary for effective collaboration with students, parents, peers, and superiors.
- Demonstrate professional behavior through critical reflection, contributing to their school or organization, growing as professionals, and exhibiting professionalism in all aspects of their work.
Unveiling the Learning Outcomes
At the successful completion of the M.Ed program, students will be able to describe education theory and practices. They will have the skills and knowledge to apply this understanding in different educational settings. Furthermore, they will possess a range of generic skills necessary for effective teaching, such as communication and ICT proficiency. Additionally, students will exhibit appropriate professional behavior, fostering critical reflection and serving as advocates for students and their families.
Course Structure: A Path to Excellence
The Master of Education degree is awarded upon satisfactory completion of 36 credit points. The course is divided into three semesters, with the first two semesters dedicated to coursework, assignments, and the final examination. The final semester is devoted to an independent project, allowing students to delve deeper into an area of their choice. Each semester, students are required to take six courses, with each course carrying two points. The guided research component contributes six points, which are course-related. The criteria for the research paper are determined by the course lecturer, ensuring a tailored and effective learning experience.
Compulsory Courses and Admission Requirements
The Research Methodology course is mandatory for all M.Ed candidates. Additionally, all subject-related courses carry two credit points each. English and Basics in Computer Science are compulsory for all students, though they are offered on a no-credit basis. To gain admission to the M.Ed program, candidates must possess a basic degree and a merit/distinction pass in the postgraduate Diploma in Education from a UGC-recognized institution. The selection criteria may vary depending on demand.
Evaluating Success, Rewarding Excellence
Students’ performance is evaluated at the end of each semester, with grades determined based on their performance in each course. Tutorials, in-class quizzes, mid-semester examinations, and final examinations all contribute to the overall evaluation. Additionally, candidates must achieve a minimum of 50 marks (6 credits) for the guided project and a minimum of 60 marks (6 credits) or above for the independent project. The final grade is a weighted average of the subject credits and grade points obtained. Candidates who fail to achieve a grade of ‘C+’ in a particular component will have the opportunity to repeat the subject up to three times. The minimum GPA required to qualify for both degrees is 3.0.
