Welcome to Jungle Bay Resort, where your dreams of barefoot luxury become a reality. This hidden gem stole my heart from the moment I arrived, captivating my imagination like no other place before. As an avid traveler and self-proclaimed hotel critic, finding a destination with that extra sparkle is always my goal. And at Jungle Bay, I found exactly that.
A Different Kind of Resort
Calling Jungle Bay a resort feels odd because it stands apart from the typical all-inclusive experience. Instead, it offers a little slice of paradise nestled amongst the trees. The resort’s secluded cottages, or as I like to call them, tree houses, have earned high praise on Trip Advisor’s list of top 25 Caribbean hotels. From glowing reviews filled with tales of adventure and relaxation to accolades from Forbes Magazine and Travel + Leisure, Jungle Bay has become a favorite among travelers seeking unique, eco-friendly luxury.
Retreat to Nature
Jungle Bay’s 35 cottages are discreetly tucked away among Cedar, Gomier, and Galba trees, accompanied by a tranquil spring-fed stream cascading through the valley below. The cottages, treated with bay leaf oil, exude an incredible fragrance and serve as a natural insect repellent, ensuring a mosquito-free stay. Once inside these hidden havens, you’ll feel as if you’ve entered your own private world, surrounded by the sights, scents, and sounds of the tropical forest. Cheeky birds and sunbathing lizards make frequent appearances on your balcony, while a gentle breeze sways a nearby hammock, inviting you to indulge in an afternoon nap.
Eco Luxury at Its Finest
Though Jungle Bay embraces a rustic ambiance, it is far from the budget huts of my backpacking days. The resort offers eco-luxury at its finest, with supremely comfortable beds, silky cotton sheets, fluffy towels, and eco-friendly bathroom products. Who needs air-conditioning or a television when you can enjoy the refreshing sea breeze and stunning ocean views?
Wellness and Rejuvenation
At Jungle Bay, wellness takes center stage, evident in the resort’s spacious yoga studios and an array of healthy activities. Guests can partake in morning, afternoon, and evening yoga classes, suitable for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. It’s heartwarming to witness first-time yoga participants discovering the practice in such a welcoming and inclusive environment. If you’re looking to take your yoga journey further, Jungle Bay also hosts yoga retreats.
After an invigorating yoga session, it’s time to indulge in a scrumptious breakfast at the Pavilion Restaurant. Set within an open-air octagonal structure, the restaurant offers a majestic view of the ocean and a stone pool. Savory Caribbean aromas waft from the kitchen as you savor your favorite seat and relish mountains of fresh tropical fruit, followed by a sinfully delicious stack of pancakes and French toast drizzled with honey. Jungle Bay proudly supports local producers, with 95% of their food being organic. Whether you’re a vegetarian, vegan, or have specific dietary needs, the restaurant offers a plethora of tasty and healthy options.
Dominica is a haven for active and adventurous travelers, and Jungle Bay provides endless opportunities for exploration. The resort offers a variety of daily activities, allowing guests to tailor their experiences to their preferences. From hiking to waterfalls and cooking classes to kayaking and snorkeling, there’s something for everyone. Heritage tours, trips to markets, and even a massage class are also available. And if you’re up for a challenge, don’t miss the 6-hour hike to Boiling Lake, a must-visit destination on my list.
As evening arrives, Jungle Bay takes on a different ambiance. Tranquility still lingers, but there’s also an atmosphere of excitement and camaraderie. Guests gather in the restaurant, sharing stories from their day’s adventures. With its intimate and friendly vibe, Jungle Bay offers the perfect setting to make new friends. And don’t forget to savor the delicious dinner menu, which might tempt you to extend your stay just to sample more of the culinary delights.
During my two-night stay at Jungle Bay, I fell head over heels in love with this magical place. While it may not be a 5-star luxury resort, it possesses a genuine sparkle that sets it apart. The staff, always joyful and welcoming, ensure a memorable experience. Owners Sam and Glenda, both Dominican with experience in the US Virgin Islands, bring a unique blend of efficiency and laid-back friendliness to the resort. Together with Nancy, the Reservation and Guest Service Manager from Switzerland, they create an exceptional cocktail of hospitality.
Rates and Logistics
Rates at Jungle Bay start at $205 USD per cottage per night, including breakfast. For those seeking adventure, the Jungle Spa Adventure Packages offer a comprehensive experience, including activities, spa time, transfers, and meals. Prices for this package start at $244 per person per night.
Getting to Dominica requires a flight to a main Caribbean hub such as Barbados or Antigua, followed by a connecting flight, typically with LIAT. While ferries are an option, I recommend flying for the speed and convenience it offers.
