This incredible trek offers breathtaking views, thrilling river crossings, and the chance to camp amidst the majestic Himalayas. Get ready to create memories that will last a lifetime!
Traversing the Bhagirathi River
As you begin your trek, a short 20-minute walk from the Bhojbasa Campsite will lead you to an exhilarating experience – a Tyrolean traverse across the Bhagirathi river. The forest authorities have also set up a small zipline to assist you in crossing the river. With each participant taking around an hour to traverse, this adds an exciting element to the journey.
Climbing Towards Tapovan
After the river crossing adventure, the trek continues on a 2.2 km path, marked by stones and rocks. The initial stretch is a gradual climb, paving the way for the challenging rock face that leads to Tapovan. This section is located near Akash Ganga, a mesmerizing waterfall cascading down the rock face. To ensure your safety, it is recommended to complete this climb before lunchtime, avoiding potential rockfalls and the strong flow of water from Akash Ganga.
An Idyllic Campsite
The climb to Tapovan rewards you with a truly awe-inspiring campsite amidst the breathtaking beauty of the mountains. Set your eyes on the magnificent Mt Shivling on the right, with the majestic Meru just adjacent. To the left, you’ll find the Bhagirathi Peaks, Thenu, and Sudarshan Parbat. From the ashram accessible from the camping area, Shivling appears even closer, offering a surreal experience.
Tapovan, an alpine meadow nestled beneath Mt. Shivling, captivates with its expansive terrain. Stretching 1.6 km, this high altitude meadow offers a few convenient camping spots. However, the area near Mount Shivling can get crowded during the summer due to the melting glacial waters. Many saints have chosen this serene location for contemplation, and you may encounter some residing permanently at Tapovan.
Journey to Neelatal
For those seeking an additional adventure, a 1.2-mile trek from Tapovan leads to Neelatal, offering a viewpoint that unveils stunning panoramas of Meru. The two-hour trek to the campsite presents you with captivating vistas along the way. From there, you can choose to hike up the ridge to reach Neelatal or continue on the same trail back to Tapovan.
