Sri Lanka’s men’s cricket team is set to kick off the new year with a thrilling limited-overs bilateral series against India in early January 2023. The series will consist of three T20 International matches and three One Day Internationals (ODIs).
T20I Series: A Thrilling Start
The T20I series, scheduled to take place in the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, promises an exciting showdown between the two teams. The first match will be held on January 3 in Mumbai, followed by the second game in Pune. The series will conclude with the third match in Rajkot. This highly anticipated series serves as a warm-up before both teams shift their focus to the upcoming 2023 World Cup, scheduled for October-November in India.
India and Sri Lanka have crossed paths in the shortest format of the game on 26 occasions. The Men in Blue have a slight advantage, with 17 victories compared to Sri Lanka’s eight. Notably, there was one match that did not produce a result. This will be the 10th bilateral T20I series between the two teams, with six of them being three-match series.
ODI Series: Paving the Way to the World Cup
Following the T20Is, the attention will shift to the three-match ODI series between India and Sri Lanka. This series holds significant importance as both teams begin their preparations for the 2023 World Cup, which will take place later in the year. The first ODI will take place on January 10 in Guwahati, followed by the second match in Kolkata on January 12. The final match of the series will be held in Thiruvananthapuram on January 15.
The last time these two teams met in an ODI series was in July 2021 when India, led by Shikhar Dhawan, emerged victorious with a 2-1 win in the island nation. This upcoming series will be their 20th bilateral ODI encounter.
Throughout their history, India and Sri Lanka have squared off in 162 ODI matches, with India holding the upper hand. The Indian team has secured 93 wins, while Sri Lanka has 57 victories to their name. Eleven matches concluded without a decisive result.
